MILITARY SPOTLIGHT

JIM CHESNUTT (1981)
US Air Force

Jim Chesnutt graduated from Wilson in 1981.  He received an Air Force ROTC Scholarship for Stanford University in 1981 and then a Health Professional Scholarship from the Air Force to go to Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) for medical school in 1985.

After graduating from medical school in 1989, Jim was sent to Eglin AFB in Florida to complete his three year Family Medicine Residency while serving on active duty in the Air Force.  He then was assigned to serve as a Family Doctor at Lajes AFB in the Azores Isles of Portugal for two years to support Desert Storm and our humanitarian efforts in Somalia. After that Jim was then assigned to McChord AFB in Washington for the final year, with an overall active duty period from 1989 to 1995.

Jim left the military and moved to Portland in 1995 to become faculty at OHSU at Gabriel Park Clinic.

"Military service was an excellent way to serve my country and get a great education at the same time," adds Jim.  "I learned to respect the leadership structure of the military which is much like any organization that we all may work for in the future. I was honored to serve with some of our country's best men and women who were dedicated to preserving peace and upholding justice in the world."
