CURRENT SCHOOL NEWS

2022 ROSE FESTIVAL QUEEN . IDA B. WELLS SENIOR

Your 2022 Rose Festival Queen is Senya Scott '22 from Ida B. Wells High School! Senya was crowned at the Queen’s Coronation, June 2022. Senya has been active in her school community as an Ida B. Wells name change committee member, No Place for Hate facilitator, Black Student Union committee member, editor of magazine news show, "Hot Tea with Senya" and lead soprano in the Wellsingers choir. She plans on attending Howard University to study political science, then would like to pursue a career as a civil rights attorney. Senya is proud of her news show, "Hot Tea with Senya". She feels that facilitating discussions on issues that are topical and timely, has given her, other students, and school staff a voice that they didn't really have before. Her favorite Rose Festival event is the Grand Floral Parade, which was the first event she saw after moving to Portland. She remembers the vibrant colors of the floats and the beautiful representation of different cultures. Like the other 14 princesses, she received a $3500 scholarship from the Randall Group. She will reign until the 2023 Queen is announced this coming June. Congratulations Queen Senya! https://www.oregonlive.com/entertainment/2022/06/portland-rose-festivals-2022-queen-is-senya-scott-of-ida-b-wells-high-school.html.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

CLASS OF 1965 PLANS FOR 2023 REUNION
The Class of 1965 held their 57th high school reunion this summer at the Stockpot on July 30th on a sunny but not too hot afternoon. The turn out was great as was the food and connection. We have our 58th reunion planned for September 10th, 2023 a Sunday afternoon at the Stockpot. We’ve got an active class, we have monthly hikes/walks followed by lunch. During COVID it’s been BYOL as weather has allowed. We’ve settled on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and there’s an open invitation to all classmates. We also have the gift of having Joe Lanning in our class. Joe is the owner of My Jeweler, located in Vancouver Washington and has donated 2 carat Diamond Earrings (1 carat each) to be raffled off to support our 60th reunion. Once we have 400 tickets sold (good odds 1 in 400) we will plan an event at the school to draw & identify the lucky winner. The intention of the raffle is to provide all our classmates (from 1965) to attend our 60th reunion for free. Kari Stoffer Stuhmer is leading the committee’s effort and we’ve already sold over a 100 tickets! If you’re interested in purchasing a raffle ticket (1 raffle ticket for $20) you can contact any of the following classmates: Shari Nease Black sharonneaseblack@gmail.com, Joe Lanning myjewelers@yahoo.com, JoAnn Prentiss Brinkman joannbrinkman@gmail.com, Mike Fleming michaelfleming8@gmail.com, Lana Edwards Sheehan mlsheehan@frontier.com, Casey Comer Milne kcm47@me.com.

CLASS OF 1971 ... reunion 2023

If you are not certain the reunion committee has your current email address, please email wwhspdx@gmail.com.

ANDREW MILLWARD (WOULD-BE CLASS OF '93)
Andrew Millward (would-be class of '93) was super-sad to move away from PDX and WWHS in 1992 with his family the summer before his senior year.  After high school, he served a 2-year church mission in Quebec, Canada.  He graduated from Utah State University in Chemistry, where he met his wife April and they began building their family.  They ventured on to grad school at the University of Michigan, where he earned a PhD in Chemistry.  He worked for Matheson Tri-Gas in CO for a few years, then spent a year at an alternative energy start-up company.  In 2010 a job at Dow Corning brought them and their 6 children back to MI.  Andrew has been there ever since, and is currently a Research Scientist at Dow.  He looks forward to connecting with friends, and can be found on LinkedIn.

1996 GRAD RELEASES NEW ALBUM

Harmonica player Joe Powers ’96 just released a NEW duo album called, “Con ojos nuevos” with Italian pianist, Guglielmo Foffani. The album features three original pieces from each artist and three famous Argentine masterpieces. All of the tracks were recorded on a single day in May of 2019 at Estudio Brazil in Madrid. The release was delayed until June of 2022 due to the global pandemic. Listen and purchase on the Music page at: https://www.joepowers.com/music.

TILLAMOOK ROCK LIGHTHOUSE IS FOR SALE AND 1960 GRAD IS EXPERT ON "OLD TILLY"

Brian Ratty '60 just finished his tenth book called Broken Arrow, a story of where North Coast Indian came from and where they are today. He's been busy with author events (www.Dutchclarke.com) but his exciting news is about his book Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. His book is fast becoming a best seller. Since Brian is an expert on "old Tilly" he was just interviewed by The New York Times for a story about the lighthouse being up for sale for millions of dollars: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/09/us/tillamook-rock-lighthouse.html.
